Wildflowers

Who ever thought that buying a pillow at a thrift store would have such an impact on me!

In August, I bought a sweet little pillow for my bed, with the words "you belong to the wildflowers". I thought, oh that is so pretty and just matches my colors.. and the saying is nice too!  And it was August, and wildflowers was such a great theme for that time of year!

It was brought to my attention, when I posted my "new" bedroom colors on my blog (by Connie at Crafty Home Cottage), that these were words from a Tom Petty song! Now.. I grew up with Tom Petty! I knew him well (by listening to his music)...........and had always loved his soulful voice. I had just NOT looked closely to all the words on the pillow.. and at the bottom "Tom Petty"! Boy talk about blind!

I decided I'd go listen to the lyrics of the song. I could relate to these words on the pillow, so I figured I'd also relate to the song.

Here are the lyrics... the words just rang out so near and dear to me. This song can mean many things to many different people...... it has several different meanings I'm sure. They would have meant something totally different to me, say 10 or 20 years ago... but now..... the words impact me much differently.

From American Songwriter.com:
Petty is drawing the song closer and closer to himself. Of course, he wanted to give solace to his listeners—any good songwriter does. But at the same time, he’s comforting himself, self-soothing. More specifically, at the time of this song’s release, Petty was in the midst of severe personal and professional change.

The creative process for “Wildflowers” actually spooked the songwriter at first. The song had come out so easily that Petty had surprised even himself.

“I just took a deep breath and it came out,” he said in a 2014 interview. “The whole song. Stream of consciousness: words, music, chords. Finished it. I mean, I just played it into a tape recorder and I played the whole song and I never played it again. I actually only spent three and a half minutes on that whole song. So I’d come back for days playing that tape, thinking there must be something wrong here because this just came too easy. And then I realized that there’s probably nothing wrong at all.”

Read/listen to the lyrics carefully...... what does this song mean to you?

Wildflowers

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on  your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free
~Tom Petty - 1994~
